Having a savings, whether in the bank or stashed in cash under the mattress, is a good idea. My grandmother used to stick canisters of money in the freezer. It really doesn’t matter where you put it, as long as you have a little cushion for when unexpected expenses pop up, and as a parent, they pop up more than you can possibly imagine.
Even if you don’t have children, the expenses can be numerous. You never know when your car is going to break down or you will get sick and need money for deductibles and copays. Everyone could use some extra money for a “rainy day”. I hate that it is called that though. I love rainy days. I spend less on those days. I just make some coffee, snuggle up on the couch with my favorite blanket, maybe a kid or two, my husband, and binge watch something that makes absolutely no sense, like The OA.
Anyway, here are some ways that you can start your own savings, with nothing, right now!
Go On A Treasure Hunt
Yesterday, I was going through clothes that my daughter had stuffed into trash bags to give away. She had stuck them in the shed, and I wanted to wash them before giving them to a friend. See my wonderful photo? That is a real dollar that was in her laundry. It was crumpled up into the smallest ball. I almost threw it away.
Have you ever counted all the loose change and dollars that you find in the laundry? I don’t return them. I figure it is a tax for doing my family’s laundry. I have found up to a $20 bill in the laundry before. If they don’t empty those pockets, that profit is mine!
Everyone checks couch cushions, but have you looked under furniture or in the air vents? Once when I went to investigate a problem with my A/C, I found a treasure trove of cards and money. My toddler had been stashing debit cards, gift cards, and cash from my wallet for me. How thoughtful! There was a $25 Bath&Body Works gift card, Starbucks gift card and 2 debit cards and driver’s licenses that I had replaced. It was like Christmas.
Clean out your purse, your wallet, the junk drawer, and your car. There is hidden money everywhere.
I love Qmee! It is an extension that goes on your browser and sometimes, when you search certain things, a side bar pops up and if you click on one of the ads, it pays you. These clicks add up in a bank that you can cash out via Paypal. I’ve cashed out several times. You get $1 per referral too. Not much, but it is free money. It is a great way to start a small savings without using your own funds.
Once you have a few dollars or several, you can start building on that. Putting it in a savings account that accrues interest is a great way to start. You can also invest the money using an app like Acorns that invests the change from your purchases. For example, if you made a purchase of $3.65, $.35 would be invested. You will see a list of your investments that are tailored to fit your needs This is a painless way to start an investment account, and you will barely know it is there. With my referral link, you get $5 free when you start investing! Win, win!
